Five members of the club rolled up their sleeves, volunteering their time to remove the centre’s kitchen, installed in 1993.
Kiama youth worker Andrew Chatfield said the old benches and appliances would make way for a commercial-style kitchen to provide training for young people.
‘‘It will change the focus of the place because there will be the opportunity to use it as a training cafe on weekends,’’ he said.
The Rotary club’s contribution would allow further planning to go ahead before the new facility was installed.
‘‘Ideally, we’d like to have it done for this summer – so hopefully by October,’’ Mr Chatfield said.
‘‘The Rotary club’s been a great support over the years.’’
Kiama Rotary Club New Generations director Michael Foye said the club was enthusiastic to bridge the generation gap and support young people.
‘‘The whole idea is to get them job-ready so they can go straight into a coffee shop,’’ he said.
