Lake Illawarra Local Area Command crime prevention officer Mark Scott said a resident of the house told police there was a crocodile in the back shed.
The man said "It's not mine. I think you know who it belongs to?".
The 1.5m crocodile was found in a garage in a large tank.
Sergeant Scott said National Parks and Wildlife, were contacted and arrangements were made for the crocodile to be taken to Nowra Zoo.
Police identified the owner of the reptile as a 23 year-old man from Dapto.
The occupier and owner of the reptile will appear at the Albion Park Local Court on August 8 charged with possess controlled protected fauna.
