The great Aussie Barbecue held at the Rotary International Convention at Cathy Freeman Park in Sydney was a great success.
The Olympic flame was lit and presented a wonderful photo opportunity. There was a fantastic atmosphere from more than 9000 worldwide delegates, who were given very welcome free snacks, fried onions, water and coffee.
Our upcoming items include June 16, when RYPEN student Lachlan Walters reports back, and our changeover night, on June 23, when our new president, Ian Johnston, will take over the reins.
Kiama Red Cross
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, June 17, 11am for social time, a BYO lunch and 1.30pm for our business meeting. Our special speaker is Leading Senior Constable Nerissa Simpson, who will give a police talk.
We will also discuss the state conference held in Griffith in May. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Contact Ruth Cole on 4232 4963.
Kiama Lions
Last Friday evening more than 200 people attended the Kiama Lions Trivia night at the Pavilion, Kiama.
More than $8000 was raised for the Kiama Lions Cancer Care fund. The fund helps pay for much-needed medication for approved Cancer Care patients in palliative care.
Julie Nestorovski of Flinders won the community raffle, valued at $5000. Tickets for the raffle were also sold by Kiama and Shellharbour schools, sporting and music groups, and youth organisations. A percentage of sales (well over $13,000) will be returned to them.
We now turn our thoughts to our annual changeover dinner, occurring on June 19.
This is the night when awards are made to deserving Lions for their work in the past year and the new board is sworn in. We will be inducting another new member on that night as well.
