POLICE ISSUE NUMBER PLATE WARNING
Lake Illawarra Police have warned residents to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity, after a recent spate of number plate thefts in Kiama Downs and Albion Park.
Beach car parks around the Kiama Downs area have been one of the main targeted areas.
Police said in recent weeks, offenders had been removing the plates via unscrewing them, or simply ripping them off.
Police said the plates were possibly being stolen for use later in other crimes, such as fail to pays at service stations.
CAR SEARCHED IN GERRINGONG – DRUGS FOUND
About 10.35pm on May 20, police were patrolling Gerringong when they came across a white van in a car park near the cemetery on Tasman Drive, which appeared to have two young male occupants.
Police stopped and spoke to the occupants.
Police observed the occupants, both from Gerringong appeared to be affected by either alcohol or a drug.
Police then smelt cannabis in the vehicle and asked the occupants if they were smoking cannabis to which they said, “yes, we have just finished’’.
Police then searched the men and found a small resealable plastic bag containing what was believed to be cannabis.
A search of the car revealed nothing further.
They boys made full admission to the possession of the cannabis stating that it was for personal use, and will receive a caution under the Young Offenders Act.
AGGRAVATED BREAK AND ENTER
About 3am on May 20, the accused and another man entered a property at Osborne Parade, Warilla through the shut but unlocked front security door and then through the glass sliding door.
At the time there were two victims sleeping in the home.
Some items were stolen from the home.
About 4am police sighted the accused in Shellharbour Road, Warilla.
The accused was searched and items stolen from the break-and-enter were located.
The accused was arrested and taken to the Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated break and enter.
He was bail refused to appear on May 28 at the Wollongong Local Court.
BARRACK HEIGHTS MAN ON DRUG CHARGES
Lake Illawarra detectives have been investigating drug supply within the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command.
Their inquiries have resulted in the charging of a married couple from Barrack Heights with multiply counts of drug-related charges.
The 44-year-old man has been charged with 10 counts of supply prohibited drug and one count of knowingly participate in criminal group.
The 43-year-old female has been charged with seven counts of supply prohibited drug and one count of knowingly participate in criminal group.
The man has been bail refused and will reappear in Wollongong on June 25, while the female is awaiting a court date.
Both offenders were on unrelated bail conditions at the time of these offences.
ELECTRONIC STUN GUN FOUND
A 26-year-old man from Berkeley has been charged with possessing a prohibited weapon.
About 1.45 am on May 18, police observed a person run to the ute in Addison, Street, Shellharbour Village and get in the passenger seat.
The ute was stopped in Wentworth Street and the driver underwent a RBT.
Cannabis could be smelt within the ute and the vehicle was searched.
Located in the ute was a bong and inside the driver’s side door trim was a black electronic stun gun.
The driver was cautioned and admitted to possessing the stun gun and knowledge they are illegal.
The man will appear before the Port Kembla Local Court on July 19.
BARRACK HEIGHTS MAN CHARGED AFTER MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH
A man will has been charged with high-range drink driving after a single-car accident.
About 11pm on May 25, police attended an accident in Jason Avenue, Barrack Heights.
On approaching a right hand curve at a speed between 60-70 kilometres/per hour the driver of a white Holden Commodore was unable to make the turn and lost control of the vehicle.
The driver, a man from Barrack Heights tried to regain control but over-steered to the right.
The car, a Holden Commodore sedan firstly collided with the South Western kerb of Jason Avenue before mounting the gutter and travelling over the council grass verge and colliding with a fence.
The car was then seen to reverse from the fence back on to the road way and drive off in a southerly direction.
A short time later the driver returned to the scene and admitted to people there that he was the driver involved.
Police then arrived and the driver was subjected to RBT. He was taken to the Lake Illawarra Police Station where he allegedly recorded a reading of .171, a high-range reading.
The driver, who was on green “P” plates was suspended from driving and charged with high-range PCA.
He will appear before the Albion Park Local Court on July 17.
DAMAGE TO LITTLE ATHLETICS PREMISES
Police investigations continue after a break-and-enter at the Little Athletics Association canteen building at Wattle Road, Flinders, resulting in approximately $5000 damage.
Police believe the incident occurred between 10am on Monday and 8.15am on Tuesday.
The offenders are suspected to have jemmied the roller door, before taking assorted soft drinks and food.
ALLEGED ASSAULT MINNAMURRA
About 11.30pm on May 22, a 19-year-old victim was walking home from Minnamurra Train Station through the golf course, when three unknown males launched an unprovoked attack.
The victim reported that it was very dark and the offenders, possibly in their mid-20s, didn’t take anything from him.
The victim sustained minor injuries.
WARILLA MAN CHARGED AFTER PAWNING PROPERTY
At the time of the offence the 42-year-old male accused, from Warilla was living with the victim and her children.
Police are alleging that on March 10 the accused attended a pawn shop in Warilla and traded some electrical items for money.
One of those items was a laptop computer which belonged to the victim.
The victim questioned the accused regarding the whereabouts of her PC, its keyboard and charger.
The accused denied having any knowledge of its whereabouts, collected his belongings and left the address.
That same day the accused attended the same pawn shop and redeemed the PC.
At the time the accused signed a note as being the owner of the property.
As of March 21, the victim had not been able to contact the accused.
The accused has made no attempt to return the victim’s PC to her.
Police were then called, investigated the matter and through pawn dockets identified the stolen property to the pawn shop from the redemption dockets.
The accused was tracked down by police and interviewed.
He is to face court at a date to be fixed, with the victim seeking full financial compensation for her stolen property.
