The Kiama Brigade received a call at 9.52am and arrived approximately five minutes later, with the centre already evacuated during that time.
“The management and staff should be praised for their prompt actions – while it turned out to be gyprock dust that had been swept up by the builders, it was good that the action was so prompt,” Mr Mitchell said.
Ironically, a practice evacuation had been planned for Tuesday this week, which had now been cancelled.
The centre reopened shortly after 10.30am.
