Twenty years ago a new service club was chartered in Gerringong.
Public relations officer James Doak said with the encouragement of the Lions Club of Kiama, a group of residents came together to spread the Lions' service model to the small town.
"In the following two decades the town has grown substantially and the Gerringong Lions Club has prospered," he said.
"Now comprising 46 members, the club has become an important part of Gerringong life.
"It has high recognition in the community and receives generous support from the town's people."
Mr Doak said the Lions had completed many projects.
This included building the whale watching platform on South Werri Headland, gardens for Mayflower Village and undertaking many upgrades of facilities at Gerringong Public School.
"The beautiful Boat Harbour Reserve was planted by Gerringong Lions, who continue to maintain it," he said.
"Lions were also very supportive in the formation of the Seven Mile Beach Landcare Group, which has gone on to win many awards."
The club's annual Youth of the Year competition has also showcased the achievements of the area's young people.
Each year, three youths are sponsored for an Outward Bound course to help develop their skills.
Mr Doak said fund-raising was an important aspect of the Lions' service model, and the Gerringong club had been innovative in that regard.
"The Flight to Nowhere and the Calendar Girls projects will be long remembered," he said.
"The annual Christmas trailer raffle has run for many years.
"Many health and disability foundations and institutions also receive donations from the club.
"One important project is Walk for an Aussie Kid, which provides money so that children with cerebral palsy may walk for the first time."
To acknowledge their achievements, the club will celebrate their 20th Charter Night on Saturday, May 17, with a gala dinner and ceremony at the Gerroa Boat Fisherman's Club, starting at 6pm for 7pm.
