The 17-year-old year 11 Kiama High School student is a member of the High School Student Representative Council (SRC) and was at a meeting recently when their teacher mentioned the opportunity, as part of Youth Week, to be Mayor Brian Petschler's "shadow".
"I thought it sounded interesting, but being in year 11 thought I would have to wait until next year and said I would put 'dibs' on it for next year," Dylan said.
"But no-one else seemed interested, so the teacher said I may as well do it this year."
McGillivray met the mayor at the Council Chambers on Monday and sat in on a briefing of councillors by the council's department heads ahead of the monthly council meeting, then attended the council meeting.
He attended a media briefing and the signing of the car that is promoting Fatality Free Friday.
"The thing I learned most was about the structure of being mayor and his workload," he said.
"But the whole experience was 'heaps good' and I am pleased I did it," he said.
