That museum would capture the rich heritage Queensland’s tennis stars have bought the state over decades and encourage a new generation of champions.

Only last week, Tennis Queensland began to assemble a ‘‘museum’’, marking the transition from the old Queensland Tennis Centre at Milton, to its new home at Tennyson.

There are some wonderful items: famous trophies, the original draw from Rod Laver’s run to the 1961 Wimbledon singles title, rare photographs, white tennis balls used by Ken Fletcher, even the billiard balls used on the snooker table at the Milton tennis centre.

‘‘There’s also the Australian Women’s Singles Trophy won by Emily Westacott in 1939,’’ Mr Laffey said.

At present, walls in the downstairs foyer have striking photographs of some of the big tennis names linked to Queensland, two display cabinets and parts of Milton’s centre court.

Wendy Turnbull and Sam Stosur are just two. There’s also Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Ashley Cooper, Pat Cash and long-term Queensland resident, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley.

Mr Laffey’s happy at the start, but he’s dreaming of a stand-alone Queensland tennis museum.

‘‘We are certainly working towards that, and we would like it here,’’ he said.

‘‘It makes sense to have it at the state tennis centre.

‘‘At this point in time we haven’t allocated any space to do that, but what we are doing is looking to get some of this donated memorabilia out, so people can see them.

‘‘Rather than having it all stored away in the back room in boxes.’’

Stadium’s Queensland is Tennis Queensland’s landlord.

It recognises almost 106,000 people came to the 2014 Brisbane International to just 12 sessions. “Stadiums Queensland is in constant discussions with its various hirers as to how venues can be improved to meet future needs,’’ a spokesman said.

‘‘In this regard, the ongoing discussions with Tennis Queensland around the Queensland Tennis Centre are no different.

“While no concepts have been determined or recommendations for museums and the like are confirmed, we’ll continue to work with Tennis Queensland to scope out what infrastructure upgrades may be required to accommodate any growth of the tournament should funding become available.”

Queensland’s Tennis Centre at Tennyson is itself getting ready for the Federation Cup semi-final tie with Germany this weekend.

As we walk through, Ashleigh Barty - the 17 year old that reached the women’s doubles finals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open with Casey Dellacqua in 2013, works out in the gymnasium.

Stosur, who has already won five WTA finals, including the 2011 US Open, says a quiet hello as she prepares for Federation Cup tussle this week at Tennyson.

Australia and Germany have met 12 times in the Fed Cup, with Australia holding an 8-4 advantage.

Mr Laffey says Tennis Queensland is delighted at news Brisbane is considering recognising Turnbull at the revamped Milton Tennis Centre.

And he’s delighted that seven world No.1 women’s tennis stars want to see Wendy Turnbull recognised in her home city.

‘‘Obviously it is outstanding,’’ he said.

‘‘From a Tennis Queensland point of view, we are very, very supportive of it.’’
