After Tony Abbott, Premier Li Keqiang and a goose-stepping Chinese soldier inspected the military guard of honour on Wednesday at Sanya, around the bay from the underwater cave that is home to China's nuclear-capable submarine fleet, Abbott asked Li aside to give him the latest on the missing Malaysia Airlines plane. Conversing in English, away from their dozens of minders, he told Li that he'd just phoned former Australian defence force chief Angus Houston and was pleased to convey his confidence that the final resting place of 153 Chinese passengers would soon be found, said sources briefed on that exchange.
