The Kiama Lions Club is chartering a new club in the Shellharbour area.

Kiama Lions Club's incoming president Peter Scifleet said there was a growing need for such a group to be established within the area.

"Although there is a successful Lions Club in Oak Flats with 30 members, the feeling locally with this new group is that with Shellharbour covering a vast area from the Minnamurra River to the boundary of Haywards Bay and the Lake Illawarra entrance, and west to the top of Macquarie Pass, is that at the least, a new club is warranted."

Mr Scifleet said a successful Lions Club operated in Shellharbour during the mid-1970s.

During its relatively short life, the club shone brightly. It was instrumental in the formation of aged care organisation Warrigal Care, now known as Warrigal.

Kiama resident Mr Scifleet said it also helped establish Blue Haven Village Kiama.

"The new Lions Club in Shellharbour is keen to form a link with the old club and with this in mind have started work at Alex Hoffman Park, at the top of Mount Warrigal, behind the original Warrigal Care facility," he said.

"The park was built by the old club, and although there has been some upkeep in the past, it needs some TLC at present.

"The goal is to set up a successful, working Lions Club which will serve the Shellharbour community well into the future.

"It will also allow service-minded people to work together for the good of the community . . . you can often achieve a lot more as part of a group like Lions."

Mr Scifleet said past Shellharbour Lions president Norm Rowland, aged 94, has thrown his weight behind the new venture.

"Norm is honoured by having his name on the avenue leading to the park, Rowland Avenue," Mr Scifleet said.

The new club has a dozen foundation members.

It meets every second Tuesday at 6.30pm for 7pm at Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club.
