The team, which includes 12 Para Sport swimmers, was announced on Sunday night at the end of the selection trials that had taken place in Brisbane. It includes world champions James Magnussen, Cate Campbell and Christian Sprenger as well as a crop of new talent that made its mark during the past week such as Mack Horton, Cameron McEvoy and David and Emma McKeon. It also includes Paralympic swimmers such as Matt Cowdrey, Blake Cochrane and Jacqui Freney.

It also includes 15 swimmers who have made their first senior team.

The Australian Sports Commission Winning Edge report last week set a target of 53 medals for the abled-bodied swimmers with the Para Sport swimmers to contribute between another four to six.

Swimming Australian high performance director Michael Scott said the medal target would be difficult but he believed the team, which has undergone a radical change in culture during the fallout of its disastrous London Olympics campaign, had the character for challenge.

"We do now have leaders, stronger leaders who support what we as the head of the team want," Scott said.

"Cate Campbell is a classic example of that. She's a great leader in and out of the pool and we've got more people stepping up so when new swimmers come onto the team we've got strong leaders who set the example and teach the rookies this is the way the team operates."'

Sullivan was surprised by his win in the 50 metre freestyle on the final night of the national titles believing he was a year away from regaining his place in the team. Sullivan, who was a member of the 4x100 freestyle relay team that was disciplined after the infamous Stilnox bonding session at a pre-Olympics camp in 2012, said he was eager to get back into the Australian team.

"The biggest thing having the year off that I missed was the racing. Being in this sort environment, it's hard to explain the thing I miss the most is when you stand up behind the blocks you know that you've only got 22 seconds to do every thing you've practiced," Sullivan said.

"It is an addictive feeling when you do finish the race and you've accomplished everything you've trained for ... if I can continue improving like I have in the past six months I will be right in thinking that I can get back to my best in the 50 and really be a competitor.

"I don't want to keep swimming just to participate, I'm still swimming because I genuinely think I can get back to me best."
