While an extraordinary nine-year contract with Sydney guaranteed the AFL’s superstar forward enduring riches, Franklin has revealed that the $10million deal that enticed him from the Hawks did not translate into instant happiness.

Declaring the personal challenges he endured after Sydney’s recruiting coup was formalised, Franklin has also tabled the important role psychologists play for footballers - an observation that suggests he has benefited from the expertise in recent times. In an interview with Channel 7’s Saturday Night Footy to be broadcast before the Swans host Collingwood - Franklin's second game in new colours - the 27-year-old said he had found good balance since forging new friendships in a new city, but that it had not come easy.

“Last year, playing football with what was going on, and the expectations of whether I was going to stay at Hawthorn or whether I was going to go wherever, it was a big, big year for me personally. And I’m not going to lie, it has been hard at times,” Franklin said.

“I think the first three or four weeks was the hardest time of my life. Having to leave Hawthorn and the football club which I love.

“Dealing with that, and having people that you can talk to, is the most important thing. Even for a mature-aged player.

“I think every club should have psychologists there for players to talk to - and who are open to discussions - because if you’re holding back you can be in a tough place at times.”

Franklin cited his relationship with Jesinta Campbell as a positive factor in him settling in Sydney after his final outing for Hawthorn last year earned him a second premiership medallion. Franklin’s Swans teammates have acknowledged, however, that it could take some time for the four-time All Australian to fit into his new side.

A modest opening round performance in which Franklin booted a single goal and had just seven touches, his smallest disposal count since mid-2009, generated much debate about Sydney’s wisdom in committing to the forward until he is 36. Retired Essendon great Matthew Lloyd was among the critics and argued that Franklin had already hit his peak – during the Hawks’ 2008 premiership season.

Accepting that an intensely focused spotlight is part of the recruitment package with Franklin – only last week Swans coach John Longmire was rubbishing reports of a rift between his $10million man and veteran Ryan O’Keefe – the club has said it could take some time for the forward to flourish in his new surrounds.
