Just 8km from Mooloolaba, the sleepy town of Buderim in the Sunshine Coast hinterland is perhaps better known for its retirement havens than its romantic getaways. But Amore on Buderim, tucked away in the back blocks of the mountain town’s residential hub, successfully breaks the mould.

THE SPACE

Outside the gates of Amore on Buderim, people are mowing their lawns and swapping jam recipes. Inside, there is an oasis of tropical forest, a sparkling pool area and cabins earmarked exclusively for couples. It almost seems out of place; that is, until you’re immersed in the ambience.

THE KIT

Just inside the front door to the cabin is a king-size bed with pillows on pillows, a doona and an animal-skin patterned throw. There are hearts – on the bed, in the intimate  lounge area, on the spa. Ah yes, the two-person spa is about two metres from the bed with a large window overlooking lush forest. The lounge is modern leather and sits in front of a large television screen and log fire. There is a small kitchenette with coffee and microwave, and the outdoor sitting area is – as per the theme – built for two.

COMFORT FACTOR

The resort is built for couples, which means there won’t be any children running around. That means it’s time to grab a bottle of champagne, perhaps a box of those rude chocolates being sold at the counter, a few heart-shaped nibbles, a hand-picked rom-com, and a picnic basket with charcuterie just the way you like it. No need to go anywhere with the picnic basket. Rather, throw on the rom com and eat in front of the fire.

FOOD

The friendly owners will help with a list of restaurants willing to deliver. But it’s equally plausible to stop off at the supermarket on the way for some cheeses, meats, fancy bread and perhaps chutney of choice. If it’s cool, once the fire is going and you’ve slipped into a robe and slippers after a spa, there might not be much desire to venture into Buderim, or nearby Mooloolaba where there is quite a few restaurants from which to choose.

Don’t worry about breakfast though, because there’s a continental mix including fruit and yoghurt in the fridge, and it’s all part of the deal.

WORTH STEPPING OUT FOR

Those staying longer than a weekend will probably want to escape the cabin. The best option there is to wander 8km down the road to Mooloolaba where there’s one of Queensland’s best beaches, a shopping strip and plenty of cafes, coffee shops and restaurants. The Brisbane Times Good Food Guide offers up the hatted Spice Bar as one of the better eats on the strip.

THE VERDICT

Amore on Buderim is in a most unlikely spot – at least from the outside that’s how it might seem. But it works. The property is an oasis of palm trees and other tropical flora. Friendly hosts, clean and intimate accommodation for two and plenty of peace and quiet are a given here because of the focus on romance. For a weekend, it’s built to host those who want to stay in, but for those with itchy feet, there’s also plenty to do within a short drive. The price is also a bonus for this type of accommodation which would likely be more expensive further up the mountain in Montville or Maleny.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Brisbane, take the 70-80-minute drive to Buderim. Once in Buderim, turn left into Dixon Drive, head down the hill and turn right into Lauren Drive. Earlybird Drive is at the end of the street. Look right for suburbia, and left for the entrance to Amore on Buderim.
