IN the opening round of the 2014 District League competition, the Oak Flats Falcons FC hosted Helensburgh Thistle at Keith Bond Oval last Saturday and kicked the season off with a 2-1 win.
Goals were scored by Jason Murdzevski and David Kiss and coach Gus Garcia was delighted with the performance of all players.
Their opponent Helensburgh proved a really tough side and it is not often that the Falcons have recorded a win against them.
A vocal crowd of supporters from both camps cheered the boys on.
Next weekend the Falcons are at home again against top contender Balgownie Rangers.
Youth grade coach Klaus Wunsch was proud of the overall team performance despite the 2-2 draw against a vastly more experienced side.
The Falcons fielded only three players from last year’s successful team, with players picked up by Premier League sides in the off-season. This opened the door for youngsters from junior clubs to fill the void.
The Falcons’ two goals were scored by Sam Markoulis while the Falcons also scored an own goal for their opponents.
Player of the match was Alex Bausch, with several others close behind.
Reserve grade won 2-1 with two fine goals by Beau Armstrong.
Regular keeper Chris Jarman was unavailable.
Evan Fowler put his hand up to take the keeper’s spot and he did well.
Man of the match was Beau Armstrong, while in first grade man of the match was shared by Richard Brown and Nathan Belsito.
