SOUTH COAST has gone close to taking out the NSW under-18 women's Division One Indoor Hockey Titles, which took place at Unanderra last weekend.
Comprised of players from Kiama to Albion Park, the South Coast side went through group play undefeated, but could not overcome a strong Sydney team and went down 7-4 in the final.
South Coast started the tournament strongly on Friday, scoring a convincing 6-1 win over Central Coast on the back of strong play from Grace Stewart and Bella Worner-Butcher.
Their second round match proved to be a much tighter affair, but strong performances from Chelsea Ford and Riley Smith helped South Coast to a 6-4 victory over Lithgow.
The third round game featured South Coast up against their eventual final opponents, Sydney, and unlike the final South Coast controlled the game from start to finish.
Five goals from Kiarra Marsh enabled South Coast to romp to a 9-1 victory.
South Coast then moved into the semi-finals via a 6-3 victory over North Shore.
The semi-final saw South Coast take on a determined New England side and in a high-scoring contest they managed to come away with a 7-all draw.
Having finished first in their pool meant the result was enough to secure a place in the final.
After their pool stage win over Sydney, South Coast took plenty of confidence into the final and were right in the game for the first half, the sides locked at 3-all at the break.
The second period was a different story however, as a determined Sydney side scored four goals to score the win.
South Coast coach Monique Isemonger was disappointed for her players, but congratulated them on their efforts.
Smith and Worner-Butcher were also selected in the NSW under-18s side.
In Division Two, South Coast took out third place in a high-scoring competition.
