OAK Flats Falcons' youth grade football team have suffered a devastating blow, going down 3-2 in extra time to Thirroul during the weekend's Football South Coast's District League grand final.
Last Saturday's first half at WIN Stadium started well, the Falcons having three golden opportunities to score but failing to capitalise.
The Falcons lost influential midfielder Alexander Bausch with asthma and they appeared to miss his composure. At that stage the score was 1-all, Falcons scoring through Jack Castelli.
An epic battle developed before Thirroul took the lead. Falcons equalised with one minute remaining and Jackson Brooks scored to force extra time.
Thirroul nabbed the deciding third goal in the first period and Falcons were unable to score again.
When Thirroul scored the third goal, Falcons had a player off with nose bleed.
The referee would not allow him back until he changed his shirt.
Falcons goal-keeper Cameron Camilleri had an outstanding game, as did the rest of the team.
In first grade, Warilla Wanderers ended their District League grand final hoodoo with a 3-1 win over Helensburgh Thistle.
Pre-season cup winners, the Wanderers finished their year as they started 2013 - by lifting an elusive piece of silverware.
