GERROA’S Sally Fitzgibbons has scored her first event victory this year winning the women's world tour event in Capbreton France, defeating fellow Australian Tyler Wright in the final.
The win, Fitzgibbons' first event victory of the year (in the Roxy Pro France - the circuit’s penultimate event), came on a day when Sally scored a perfect 10 and claimed the final 17.67 to 17.00.
With her dad and brother in France and the rest of her family watching online, Sally said was ecstatic after the win.
‘‘I'm so stoked, it's been a long road this year and I wanted to finish strong,’’ she said.
Wright took the upper hand in the final when she jagged a perfect 10 of her own, before Fitzgibbons fought back with a late-scoring wave.
The result, Wright's third runner-up of the year, consolidates her second place on the rank 200 points behind Carissa Moore - setting up an exciting finish for the final event in Portugal next week.
‘‘In that final we switched peaks and I was just sorting things out when she got that 10, and I couldn't hear anything after that,’’ Fitzgibbon said.
‘‘I got that last good one and I was hoping it would be enough. It's the most amazing feeling.’’
