"The Local Sporting Champions Grants is a terrific program that helps to support our local young people who are representing our community in a range of sports," Jones said.
"The Illawarra is a nursery for sporting champions and this grants program is important in supporting our budding sporting champions and their families with the cost of competing on the state and national stage.
"I was pleased to congratulate this great group of local champions and their families today, and to provide them with a contribution to help them continue their great sporting endeavours."
The recipients, who each received a cheque for $500, included Kory Griffiths, who will compete in the Australian BMX championships; Blake Govers, to assist with costs to compete in the Australian Hockey under-21 competition; Alexis Mastrodomenico, who will take part in the Australian Open Swimming championships; and Jessica Rosskelly, due to compete internationally in canoeing.
The Local Sporting Champions program is an federal government initiative designed to provide financial assistance for young people aged 12-18.
The funds are to go towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting organisation (NSO) endorsed state, national or international sporting championships, or a School Sport Australia state or national championships.
