Wind damage is one of the most destructive storm elements, and Shellharbour City residents are being urged to prepare their homes and businesses now.

StormSafe Week runs from September 2-8.

The NSW State Emergency Service is focusing on limiting the amount of damage caused by windstorms.

Richard Hart, planning and intelligence and community engagement and media co-ordinator for the SES Shellharbour City Unit said storms in the Shellharbour LGA were common between October and March.

Mr Hart said early preparation could save residents money and time, while also bringing peace of mind during the coming storm season.

So the Shellharbour City Unit is offering preparation tips to residents.

"There are many simple things residents can do to protect their homes," Shellharbour City Unit local controller Terrie-Ann Hurt said.

"Basic maintenance like trimming overhanging branches and clearing gutters and drains, tying or securing lightweight objects such as trampolines and garden furniture, and tucking away your car undercover can go a long way in preventing storm damage."
