THE third annual Tongarra Train Fest will be held on Sunday, September 8.
The Train Fest this year will feature the running of the Illawarra Light Railway Museum Society (ILRMS) fleet. Other community-based groups will also have displays at the ILRMS site at Albion Park Rail on the day, including the Shellharbour Four Wheel Drive Club, Illawarra Vintage Car Club, the Early Holden Club, the Camp Fire Cooking Club, Southern Highlands Vintage Farm Machinery, the SES and more.
"2013 is a special year as we will be celebrating the 100th birthday of 'Wallaby' - the locomotive that stands at the front of the museum and we will be placing a centenary plaque on the loco itself," Society treasurer Brad Johns said.
"Wallaby worked at Hoskins works in Lithgow until 1932 then transferred to AIS Port Kembla. It was retired in 1962 and stood at the visitors centre at BHP from 1963 to 1978, before being donated to the ILRMS in 1978. This will be great to mark its birthday on the Train Fest Day."
Train Fest highlights include:
■ Heritage steam, diesel and miniature train rides.
■ Displays by the NSW Police crime prevention van, NSW State Emergency Service.
■ Car displays - Holden Car Club, vintage cars and Shellharbour four wheel drives.
■ Traditional Camp-Fire Cooking Club on site with hot food for sale.
■ Working farm machinery display from Southern Highlands Farm Machinery.
■ See the ILRM stationary steam engine display.
