A number of sections of the road were damaged during the flooding in March 2011 and the repairs have taken time due to negotiations between Kiama Municipal Council and the state government over funding arrangements.
"We're delighted that the work is under way, especially work on the main issue. There are a couple of other small bits to be fixed but hopefully it should all be done in a few weeks," Kiama Mayor Brian Petschler said.
"It's taken time because we had the funding approved from the Natural Disaster Assistance Scheme for the replacement of what was damaged, but then we had to negotiate to get funding for the betterment of the road so this doesn't happen again."
Council's director of engineering and works Bryan Whittaker said the work to improve the road would include measures to reduce the effect that water run-off would have on the road.
"The work to better the road will include improving the drainage around the road to reduce the effect that any run-off could have in undermining the road and using concrete blocks rather than rocks to build the revetments around the road that will be much stronger," he said.
While the works are set to solve the problems caused by the damage, which have included half closures of the road, there is likely to be some more temporary pain for users of the road.
"From my understanding it's likely that there will be some delays as well as road closures and detours.
"Unfortunately because of the type of work and where it is being carried out it's highly unlikely that any of it could be done at night," Mr Whittaker said.
