CONCERNS have been raised about surf rescue times on Kiama's beaches, with claims Surf Life Saving NSW has not always called on the closest resources in emergencies.
Kiama Municipal Council has reported volunteer lifesavers from the Kiama Surf Club were called to rescue five people swept into a rip on the southern end of Bombo Beach on New Year's Day when the council's lifeguards were on duty at the northern end with a jet ski.
The report said lifeguards monitored the call and retrieved the swimmers from the water before lifesavers reached the scene and indicated the communication issue had occurred more than once.
"Despite numerous assurances that the closest and most appropriate resource will be accessed, the Surf Life Saving duty officer continues to task surf club members despite, on occasions, council lifeguards being better positioned to respond," it said.
