Washed-up boat billed

THE owner of a boat which ran aground at Jones Beach last Thursday has been left with a hefty bill after NSW Roads and Maritime Services removed the vessel.

The 9.2-metre Red Sonia washed ashore after an unsecured deck line became tangled in the boat's propeller, causing the engine to lose power.

RMS Boating Safety officers conducted the salvage effort on Friday afternoon and removed about 2500 litres of contaminated diesel and saltwater from the vessel during low tide.

A crane and excavator was used to salvage the vessel in one piece and the vessel was then taken to Port Kembla for storage.

There were no injuries with no pollution or oil spilled.

The RMS will send recovery costs to the owner.
