The park is calling for volunteers to be part of The Friends of Killalea initiative.

Park manager Nathan Cattell said he hoped the group would meet once or twice a month, depending on the level of interest.

"I want to get the community involved in the upkeep of the park," Mr Cattell said.

"I want to get a core volunteer group that will assist with things like weed maintenance, rubbish removal, bush regeneration and track maintenance; everything that operates in the park.

"I'd also like to get a community garden up and running."

A range of free training sessions for volunteers, covering topics such as plant identification and weed species, will take place throughout the year.

Mr Cattell, who has been in his current role for almost five months, said previous experience interacting with the community while working at other parks and reserves had proven beneficial.

"I've worked with in excess of 250 volunteers at Lane Cove before I started here and it was very successful.

"I think it can be very successful here.

"I think there is a demand for it as the community are passionate about the park.

"They'll get a better understanding of day-to-day operations and work with the staff here."

Interested parties can attend a meeting on Wednesday, January 23 at the park's main office at 6pm.
