Kids fish for charity

LOCAL children and visitors alike are busy wetting their lines in preparation for the 12th annual Children's Charity Fishing Comp on Sunday, January 20.

To be held at Kiama Harbour, the event will raise money for Peterborough Special School.

Sign-in is from 8am at the Surf Club Rescue boat shed, opposite the boat ramp at Kiama Harbour, with fishing from 9am to noon and the entry fee is $5 per child. The presentation is at 12.30pm.

Three divisions will be catered for - under-six, six to 11 and 11 to 16 - and all fish caught will be kept in buckets donated by Bunnings at Shellharbour and released after weigh-in to promote the Catch and Release program promoted and practised by Kiama Game Fish Club.

"This is a vital part of the Kiama GFC to promote sustainable fishing and by promoting it to these youngsters, hopefully it will be a practice they take with them," Kiama Game Fishing president Mark Way said.

Major sponsors of the event are Shimano Australia, Rapala Freetime Australia, Bunnings Shellharbour, Ocean Storm Kiama, Toy World Kiama and Kiama Leagues Club, with the support from Kiama Tourism.

Last year's funds were also used to buy first iPads for Peterborough Special School.
