It's terrifying for punters but owners love Waller's winning ways

04 Jul, 2011 12:20 AM

Chris Waller has risen to Sydney racing's summit and is terrorising punters. The Kiwi, who arrived in Australia just over a decade ago with a couple of horses and a hastily borrowed financial guarantee required to gain a licence, has been a revelation.

Waller is devoid of ego, and committed to making sure the entire training regime is continually revised, modified, updated. He will tell you there is much improvement to come. He is not standing still.

He has surrounded himself with a workable command structure and a committed team of employees willing to play the team game. He will tell you he is only as good as his subordinates.

That may be so, but all good organisations in the world of business or on the sporting field need a general to make sure there is no collapse. Waller is that man. In leading by example, he has obviously set high standards - the type appreciated by an ever expanding group of owners. Everybody wants to be associated with a winner.

Bob Ingham and late brother Jack built an empire delivering chicken to households, and ploughed millions of dollars into the racing game.

Bob Ingham went to Waller when his unmatched Woodlands Stud empire was sold, lock, stock and bridle to Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud operation for $500 million.

Ingham obviously saw something in Waller as he remains a valued client. It is no surprise Waller's elevation to the peak coincided with Ingham weighing in. Waller has said Ingham's advice on all things in life has been much appreciated.

Nine days ago on the home track at Rosehill, Waller bagged a winning treble. The wins elevated him into the hall reserved for a select few of his peers. He joined the ''100 club'' - the greatest, T.J. Smith, his daughter Gai Waterhouse, Hall of Famer John Hawkes and Brian Mayfield-Smith - as the only people to train 100 winners on Sydney tracks in a racing season.

The season ends at the end of the month, and Waller hasn't finished - he bagged another four winners at Rosehill two days ago.

He is set to be acclaimed as Sydney's premier trainer. This season he has taken 973 horses to the track and won 129 races. There have been 137 seconds and 121.5 thirds. He has collected $8,368,705 for his owners but last season the prizemoney gathered was $9,539,910 with 912 horses resulting in 135.5 winners, 100 seconds and 123.5 thirds.

As the numbers above suggest, there is no shortage of conveyances to gamble upon, but how to make a buck? In the past month alone there were 11 meetings in the metropolitan area. Such is the Waller dominance, 19 horses from his stable were sent out favourite in the 85 races in that period.

The problem is 12 have been beaten. Last Saturday's winners, Wazn and Mutawarath, bounced back to win next time around. Could that be the key to earning a quid? Back a Waller beaten favourite next time around. Maybe, maybe not.

Mutawarath was sent off by bookmakers as a $17 chance, with the TAB returning a figure of $25 for the win. Mutawarath was the longest priced of Waller's three runners in the event.

Maybe that is the way to go. Back Waller's outsider when he has multiple runners in a race. Wazn did win as favourite at the weekend with the stablemate and $7.50 chance Our Cannavaro finishing third.

At Rosehill the previous Saturday, Waller's galloper Mikiyama was sent out favourite at $3.70 but stablemate The Verminator won at $8.

Only last Wednesday, Ingham Magic went off as the $4.20 favourite but couldn't fend off stablemate Mickelberg. Terrifying for punters.
