Sydney cold snap behind us - for a few days at least

15 Jul, 2011 09:58 AM

Sydneysiders may have woken up to this year's second coldest morning today, but take heart - the cold snap is behind us, for a few days at least, meteorologists say.

The mercury dipped to a low of 5.6 degree in Sydney overnight, 2.4 degrees below the July average and just 0.1 of a degree warmer that the year's coolest morning on Friday, weatherzone.com.au reported.

In Richmond, temperatures fell to a freezing -0.5 degrees. In Perisher Valley, the minimum temperature dropped to -10.3 degrees, the coldest night since last winter.

But the weather is set to warm up over the weekend and in the early part of next week.

"When the winds tend easterly they bring in more humid air from off the Tasman Sea," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Alex Zadnick said.

"The humidity or moisture moving in off the Tasman Sea brings in more cloud, which will lift minimum temperatures over the weekend and this also brings the risk of a few showers, particularly to coastal suburbs of Sydney."

But Mr Zadnick said windy conditions were expected to return mid-next week.

"There is a prospect a low-pressure system forming near the NSW coast mid-next week, which is likely to bring a return of windy conditions to Sydney."

He said the low may not just bring increasing winds but also wet weather.

Wednesday hit a maximum of just 12.3 degrees compared with Tuesday's 19 degrees - the first time in 15 years that Sydney has experienced such contrasting temperatures.
