Film director James Cameron has opened an office in Melbourne that will specialise in equipment for 3D films and broadcasting.

The office will provide 3D cameras for film and television projects and live sports broadcasting. Mr Cameron, who directed the blockbusters Avatar and Titanic, opened the office with long-time collaborator Vince Pace.

Mr Cameron said he was excited about the prospect of "world-class" 3D projects in Australia. "3D is the future for both film and broadcasting," he said.

Andrew Wight, producer of 3D feature Sanctum, was appointed managing director of the Cameron Pace Group's Australian office.

Mr Wight said the office would allow filmmakers in Australia to use the same technology that Cameron used in Avatar. "There is a wealth of creative talent in this country and now we can provide the 3D know-how and equipment to match that talent," he said.
