Jones Beach Boardriders celebrate new season

08 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
Jones Beach Boardriders (JBB) kicked off their season with the first pointscore round on Saturday.

The decent swell over the summer left many surfers frothing for competition as was evident from the 72 competitors turning up for the season-opening event.

Huey (the "God of Surfing" in surfing lingo) provided JBB with excellent conditions, a 2-3 foot swell from the SE, with light offshore winds under a clear blue sky.

Competition got under way with the Junior U/13 grade, which was won by Chae Conti.

Heat winners in Junior U/16-grade were Jay Longbottom, Sam Bridger, Callum Lee and Mitchell Nightengale.

The B-grade heats were won by Jye Wakeham, Kane Davies, Lee Pickering, Jarrod Gillespie, Kody Chatham and Shannon Malone. Brendan Russell's return to competitive surfing resulted in a heat win in A-grade.

Steve McGregor, Will Hartgerink, Matt Goodwin, Geoff Latimer, Ben Robinson and Mick Robinson were also heat winners in A-grade.

Chef Bartoli cooked and cooked until everybody had their fair share of sausage sandwiches and the wind swung SE around midday, which deteriorated the conditions slightly for the last heats.

All in all it was a fantastic start to the season in which many of the new/returning members made their presence felt by winning their heats. JBB is looking forward to an exciting year.

Jones Beach Boardriders is sponsored by Fredericks IGA, Dissident Clothing, Zink Surf, Kiama Golf Club, Designdetiempo (aconcept4), Dylan Surfboards, Living Images Photography, CPT Building, Jeff Lee Bricklaying, Haworths Guitars, Touchdown Helicopters and Jim Beam.
