NEXT month's Leukaemia Foundation World's Greatest Shave will have special significance for three employees from Kiama's Saltwater restaurant who will face the barber in an attempt to raise funds.
Jess Dunn, Bronwyn Murphy and Jessica Taylor have embarked on a campaign to raise as much money as possible for the worthwhile cause and are delighted with the results to date.
Traditionally, the shave attracts a plethora of men, but the Saltwater ladies, who have adopted the slogan 'Bald is Beautiful', are looking forward to the challenge.
The trio will host a 'carnivale' type evening at the Kiama Bowling Club on Thursday, March 15, with entertainment and raffles starting at 5.30pm. The big shave starts about 8.30pm.
Jess Dunn instigated the night and then asked her workmates to help out, with the duo readily accepting the challenge.
“I decided to arrange the night to show how much I care and to have the other two girls involved is great,” Jess Dunn said.
Mrs Murphy said it was a way to honour people who don’t have a choice.
“It’s the people who do have the choice that can make the real difference,” she said.
Jess Taylor said she has two small girls and it’s a way of being a bit of a role modeld in the event.
Jess Dunn said the community support has been tremendous.
“Anyone who would like to start raising money and join in our night are more than welcome - the more the merrier,” she added.
Mrs Murphy said she had a bit of an ‘epiphany’ where she envisaged the whole Kiama community getting involved. “It would be a way of our community saying it matters,” she said.
The ladies would love to hear from anyone who would like to get involved, from shaving their heads, colouring their hair or even shaving their eyebrows. World’s Greatest Shave shirts are being sold as are Saltwater ‘Bald is Beautiful’ caps for $15.
The Kiama Golf Club is also getting involved in the World’s Greatest Shave on March 17. Details in a coming edition.
