FOR one day this September, those with limited walking ability will be able to access the Kiama Coastal Walking Track with the help of a four-wheel drive.
Black Diamond Recreation 4WD Club president Lee Dunstan regularly works around the track and he thought everyone should be able to experience the public walking track, regardless of their ability.
“It’s such a beautiful part of the track and it would be a shame for so many to miss out on the opportunity,” he said.
“It’s too good not to share.”
He said the club would run scenic drives on September 11 for the elderly and those with a disability free of charge.
“We like being able to provide something,” he said.
“As long as they enjoy it, that’s all we ask.”
At the council’s recent meeting, councillors limited the number of crossings to 10 return trips to limit the impact on the track’s surface.
“Because it’s the first time we’re running it, we have to make sure the council’s happy with how we run it and ensure there’s no damage to the track,” Mr Dunstan said.
“We’ll use soft approach tyres at the appropriate pressures.”
But he warned the day would only go ahead with the council’s green light and would be postponed if it rained.
Due to occupational health and safety, all participants must be able to get themselves in and out of the four-wheel drives unassisted.
Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy hoped the scenic drives would bring the participants an appreciation of the environment.
“(The track) is something truly special,” she said.
Mr Dunstan said there had already been some interest in the excursion, but the club was looking for more.
