Action over park colours

22 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
THE approved colour scheme and layout for the new Jamberoo Action Park expansion is set to change when the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel considers proposal amendments next month.

Changes to the original proposal will be debated at the Kiama Council Chambers on March 1 after the park's operators objected to 25 of the 212 consent conditions placed on the development last July.

Kiama Council's assessment staff have recommended 16 be modified, including the introduction of brighter colours in the park's colour scheme.

In the park's submission to Kiama Council, it said "the contribution of colour is integral to successful theming and its importance should not be underestimated".

As a result, the larger Tornado, Behemoth Bowl and Uphill Coaster rides were recommended to remain in earthy recessive colours to limit their visual impact, however bright blues, oranges, greens and yellows could be included in the smaller buildings, cloth shades and children's play area.

The report to the JRPP said landscaping would camouflage those buildings from residents' view.

The park's management had requested an orange and blue colour scheme for the Uphill Coaster, but the report said landscaping was "unlikely" to hide it.

Under the new proposal, the Tornado Ride would be lengthened by 68m and the Behemoth Bowl by 70m, meaning their height would increase by 5.6m.

Meanwhile the start tower would be moved 45m uphill - more landscaping has been added to the plans on the lower side of the start tower.

The report said despite the changes, they were similar enough to the original development, however there would be a minor increase in the visual impact.

"With the exception of increased visual impacts, there are likely to be minimal adverse impacts to the natural and built environments as a result of the proposed modifications," it said.

"The extension of the Tornado ride and the Behemoth Bowl ride is no greater than the height level than with the other approved rides in (the DA)."

Other conditions were recommended to be changed to fix typographical errors and allow construction to be staggered.

The JRPP, including Mayor Sandra McCarthy and Kiama Council general manager Michael Forsyth, will consider the changes on Thursday, March 1 at 6pm.
