FOR most people, a footpath provides an easy walking route, but for the residents on the eastern side of Belinda Street in Gerringong, a new footpath would be a lifeline.
Belinda Street residents Peter Hainsworth and Heather Williams said no footpath on either side of the street meant walkers risked tripping on Norfolk Island pine roots or being hit by a car if they walked on the road.
"One old gentleman tripped on a root the other day, broke his glasses and needed six stitches under his eye," Mr Hainsworth said.
"The oldies from Mayflower come up in their mobile wheelchairs and the only place they can go is on the road.
"It's an accident waiting to happen."
The two have campaigned for a footpath since February last year, starting with a petition.
Ms Williams said traffic had increased since the Gerringong Headland was developed about 18 months ago.
"Tasman Drive and Belinda Street are now the main access to Werri Beach, it's increased enormously," she said.
"It's also the way to the off-leash area, the rock pools, the whale watching platform and the cemetery."
She said the route was heavily used by pedestrians and had conducted her own counts.
"In one hour, I counted 50 adults, 15 children, 10 dogs and six prams," she said
"I regularly see 20 cars in five minutes," Mr Hainsworth said.
Ms Williams said Kiama Council had done traffic and speed counts and results showed only 10 per cent travelled above the speed limit.
"I think it's a higher proportion than that," she said.
Currently the footpath ends at Noble Street at the Gerringong township side and at the intersection of Belinda Street and Tasman Drive on the beach side.
Mr Hainsworth was incensed when Kiama Council started construction on a footpath at Jupiter Street first.
"There are 13 houses, which is half the houses in this street and most people who use the road drive down with their boats," he said.
Council staff have told residents the Belinda Street footpath will be in the 2012-13 draft budget.
"We want it to be in the budget," Mr Hainsworth said.
Kiama Council director of Engineering and Works Bryan Whittaker said the draft budget would come to council in March.
He said the Jupiter Street footpath was part of the 2011-12 budget and had been requested by residents.
