Blair Day steadies the ship on the second leg of the board race at the lifeguard challenge held at Surf Beach Kiama last Thursday.

FIFTEEN competitors turned out at Surf Beach Kiama last Thursday to contest the inaugural lifeguard challenge between Kiama, Wollongong and Shellharbour Council.

Council lifeguards from each council area contested a double ski, double board and a double run to top it all off. Kiama lifeguards Alistair and Blair Day took top honours on the day.

" Alistair Day sprints to victory in the relay last week at Surf Beach in the inaugural lifeguard challenge.

Kiama Surf Beachs head lifeguard Andy Mole was pleased with the initiative and is now looking forward to the busy summer holiday period that awaits.

It was an initiative taken jointly by Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama Councils to promote surf safety, he said.

It was plenty of fun, is a good way for all lifeguards to network and good for the community.

There was a relay of two board paddlers, two swimmers and two runners and Kiama also took out that event.

All the life guards have been training Tuesday mornings and I am really pleased with how they all performed.

We are now looking forward to a very busy summer, he added.
