WHERE’S THE LOGIC?

Flashing lights should be at all school zones, says Ann Sudmalis.
FLASHING lights should be outside every school where needed to warn motorists children are about, according to Liberal candidate for Kiama Ann Sudmalis.
While the sitting Labor member for Kiama Matt Brown was busy announcing flashing lights for some schools in Shellharbour and Wollongong, none have been announced for Kiama.
Mrs Sudmalis told the Kiama Independent the Iemma-Costa Labor Government had ignored the safety of thousands of local students whose schools remain without flashing lights.
Every school should have flashing lights, especially schools on busy roads.
Michael Costa and Morris Iemma have been raking in thousands of dollars in traffic fines from drivers who simply dont know if its a pupil free day or school holidays, or what the exact time the 40km/h zone is enforced, she said.
Mrs Sudmalis wanted to know what study the government had done to determine which children were at risk.
What is the breakdown of traffic studies? Is it determined by the number of kids crossing the road or the number of cars?
We have flashing lights being installed on the Princes Highway at Bomaderry in front of the Anglican College yet no kids cross there.
Similarly you dont see students crossing Shellharbour Road in front of Sule College yet flashing lights are going there?
What about Kiama children who are crossing busy Manning Street?
The flashing lights should be placed according to the number of children at risk.
Flashing lights in school zones and more crossing supervisors are the answer to protecting our school children. The fact is, for three years now the Iemma Costa Labor Government has been sitting on a trial of flashing lights in school zones.
Labor has had 12 years to protect the states school kids how many more tragedies will it take before Morris Iemma and Michael Costa match the Liberal/Nationals Policy and install flashing lights across NSW school zones? Mrs Sudmalis said.
Mr Brown, who is also Parliamentary Secretary for Roads, announced flashing lights for Fairy Meadows Public School, Illawarra Sports High School, Illawarra Sule College at Shellharbour, Shellharbour Anglican College, The Illawarra Grammar School and Warilla High School.
Mr Brown described it as new technology that had been installed and tested over the summer holidays.
