KIAMA Council’s new mobility and walking trail maps and a guide to physical activity in the municipality for older people have been official launched.

Launching the resources, Mayor Sandra McCarthy said they would serve as a source of motivation for people who would like to enjoy the range of physical activities on offer in the municipality.

“The launch of these initiatives will continue to achieve the goals of the Kiama Public Health Plan, which aims to create an environment that encourages a healthy lifestyle and promotes individual and community wellbeing as well as environmental sustainability,” she said.

The walking map and activity guide were developed by the council’s Environmental Services Department, led by Julie Errey and aided by Wollongong University student Kirsty Carr as part of her honours studies.

The council’s access committee, chaired by Councillor Joyce Wheatley, has been putting together the mobility map for at least three years.

“Every time we went to go to print, the engineers would come in and change something, or a bus stop would move or the taxi rank would change,” Cr Wheatley said.

Despite this, she was pleased with the consideration the various council departments gave to mobility and access in the region.

The three resources are now available from council buildings as well as on the council’s website.

What a pity you didn't provide a link to those resources on the council's website. I've spent a fruitless 10 minutes or more trying to find them, and found nothing but the news release offering a photo opportunity for the mayor and Joyce Wheatley at the launch on Dec 13, plus another frustrating mention of the maps being available on the council website!
