EQUIPMENT to help the visually impaired be more independent is on trial at the Kiama Library for the next two weeks.

The Kiama Lions Club arranged for the trial of the Quantum Technology equipment and computer software to help its members decide whether the community would benefit from them purchasing it.

The Clear View machine magnifies anything put under its screen and can be used for looking at text, photos or to assist with writing, such as signing cheques.

Dick Maitland from the Lions said the club had been approached by Trish Havenhand from the VIP Support Group to look at purchasing the equipment.

“In investigating this we have discovered that there are some 100 people in the area that could possibly benefit from having such equipment at the library,” Mr Maitland said.

“If there is a need for this by the visually impaired then the Kiama Lions will look at funding it.”
