ONE-DAY cricket made a temporary return to the South Coast on Saturday after day one of the first round of 2008 was washed out.
Despite the makeshift matches, competition leaders Oak Flats maintained their position with a seven-wicket win over Jamberoo at Gerry Emery Oval.
The Rats amassed 3/240, highlighted by an unbeaten 99 by Kerry Penfold.
Penfold shared in an unbeaten 131-run, fourth wicket stand with Rob Hill (62 not out) to close the innings after Col Yeaman hammered 56 at the top of the order.
Keith Meadows (2/22) was the pick of the Jamberoo bowlers.
Darren O’Connell (4/11), Andrew Newman (2/22), Ty Cherry (3/10) and Rob Hill (1/9) combined to wreck Jamberoo’s batting effort, which produced only 59.
Meanwhile, Albion Park were given an almighty fright by Kiama at Keith Grey Oval.
Kiama went into the final over of the match needing ten runs to win but fell two runs short with two wickets in hand.
Earlier, Albion Park posted 8/186, led by 83 not out from Paul Schofield while Dale Scifleet bagged 3/28 for Kiama.
Scifleet then added 77 with the bat while Tim Wolf (41) and John Simon (39) also made handy contributions for the Cavs.
Graeme Smith proved the hero for Albion Park, bagging 5/21.
At Howard Fowles Oval, Lake Illawarra scored a big win over The Rail.
Batting first, the Razorbacks could only manage 69, with their innings wrecked by Brendan White (5/30), Aaron Henry (3/13) and Tony Panecasio (2/2).
Only two Razorbacks bats could reach double figures, while all but one of the Lake players did as their side amassed 6/254.
Tony McCabe top scored with 72 while White completed a handy double by scoring 64.
Simon Bartlett (2/41) and Matthew Olsson (2/53) tried hard for The Rail.
One-day cricket’s return was a tonic for Warilla, who scored a four-wicket win over Shellharbour at Tom Willoughby Oval. Batting first, the hosts posted 142, while Frank Hidasi (2/16), Gerard Healey (2/21), Nic Maddinson (3/21) and Gavin McCauley (2/34) all bowled well. Craig Bramble then hit an unbeaten 44 for the Kookas.
