The NSW Rural Fire Service has recently conducted a school cadets program at Kiama High School.

Superintendent Richard Cotterill said it was the first time the school cadet program had been run in the Illawarra.

“It’s encouraging to see these students engaging in the program and they have all exhibited a high level of commitment to the program,” Supt Cotterill said.

“I believe the cadet program will benefit not only the rural Fire Service, but also the students as they learn and apply skills and attitudes that they can use in the future.”

Thirteen Kiama High School students participated in the program throughout second term on Wednesday afternoons at school.

The cadet program presents students with the opportunity to follow the training and service ideals in the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Cadets participate in interesting and challenging training that: • Provides practical life skills;
• Develops leadership, teamwork and initiative skills;
• Foster qualities and community responsibilities and service;
• Fire awareness;
• Leadership;
• Fire science educational program;
• Personal development, and
• Accident prevention in the workplace.

Cadets will graduate and display their new skills today (Wednesday) at 1.45pm at Kiama High School oval.
