KATINA CURTIS

THE fourth Tune Me Up @ Tory’s gig has something for everyone with a bit of punk, Indie, hip-hop and rock on offer.

Headliners Free Agent Crew are playing in Kiama for the first time.

The guitarist for the five-piece group, Shaun Snider, described their sound as a mixture of hip-hop and funk with a bit of rock.

The Wollongong outfit has played in Melbourne, Canberra and Queensland and got some regular airtime on Triple J’s Home and Hosed show last year.

Snider said they have been together in their present arrangement for about a year, although vocalist/pianist Simon Grant and vocalist/turntables Sean Sheap have been together for longer.

Driven by funk grooves, Free Agent Crew keeps the crowd on their feet, conveying conscious lyrics and catchy hooks, but never sacrificing the opportunity to take their music to the masses.

Local punk band On Empty – formerly known as The Winning Jester – will open the show.

The gig is also acting as one of their two launches of the band’s debut EP, with the second launch at Kiama Leagues Club in March.

Filling out the bill are Tune Me Up @ Tory’s regulars The Conspiracy Plan and Wollongong Indie rockers The Jacket.

The Jacket describes themselves as “a young band of stooges hailing from all corners of the Steel City”.

The four-piece group started off as a cover band and have recently been capturing hearts and minds with their own compositions.

They are now working on their debut EP and last year performed well in the Statewide Youth Rock Competition.

Tune Me Up @ Tory’s kicks off at 8pm on Friday (February 1) at the Kiama Inn on Terralong Street. Entry is free.
