GERRINGONG should sneak into the South Coast cricket second grade semis after a three-run, first-innings win over Lake Illawarra.
Lee Hayward called correctly and elected to bat in this crucial match at Gerry Emery Oval.
However, the hosts could only post 83, led by Dan Jones (24) and useful contributions from Glenn Hayward, Brad Rutledge and Tom Johnson.
In reply Lake were 9/72 but added eight runs to be within one clean hit of victory.
Lake tailender Jamie Crowhurst made an almighty swipe at speedster Sam Cahill, only to have his castle knocked over.
Teammates swarmed around Sam who had toiled into his 16th over to snare 5/32.
Jesse O’Hare (three wickets) and Dan Jones (two) gave great support and an outright result looks highly probable on Saturday.
The thirsty thirds ran up a huge total of 9/316 (dec.) in their match against Albion Park at Athol Noble Oval. There were 20 sixes hit on the ground that was slow due to heavy midweek rain.
Former first grade allrounder Glenn Hamblen, who has been out of the game for three seasons and who is still recovering from a broken leg, played a confidence-building, watchful knock of 83.
Others to follow Glenn’s example were Steve Emmett (74), Ben Emmett (62, including eight 6s), Matt Swain (29), Elly Asgill (26) and Casey Detheridge (21).
At stumps the Park are 1/66 with Aaron Reeves the successful bowler.
Fifths had a 112-run win over Albion Park at Des King Oval. Skipper Keenan Hobbs called correctly and batted and the team made a massive 5/260. Ryan Staples fell nine runs shy of his ton to continue his fine season. Matt Murray hit 64, Keenan got 48 and Craig Mowbray 32. The side consolidated second spot by restricting the Park to 6/148.
