KIAMA Men's Hockey Club's second grade played their match against University Red on Friday night.
The team was short a couple of key players who were admirably replaced by second grade debutant Will Carney who scored a great goal to bring the score to 2-1 by halftime.
The efforts of Dan Owen and Thomas Huetter were considerable in ensuring the opposition were never able to feel comfortable with a one-goal lead.
A skilful flick by Matt Rae on a short corner brought Kiama into contention until a goal a few minutes from the end gave University side a 4-2 win.
Third grade played a much improved match against Fairy Meadow for the second week in a row but sustained a 2-1 loss.
The 2-1 defeat was highlighted by a well taken low-left slap shot by Joshua Day, who is fast developing a reputation as the club's most consistent goal scorer.
Fourth grade's 10-man defence held firm, but they suffered a 1-nil defeat.
One of Kiama's rare scoring chances came just before halftime when Peter Binns sent a pass into the circle for a high deflection that went just wide of the mark.
Fifth grade scored revenge on Fairy Meadow with a 2-nil win after being on the wrong end of the same scoreline the week before.
The first goal came from a penalty stroke converted by Laurie Doonar.
The stroke had been earned from an aggressive attack on the Fairy Meadow goals by Mitch and Miles Burke.
The second goal was scored by Peter Garrard off a well-struck short corner by Andrew Boxsall.
The Kiama backline of Mick Burke, Laurie Doonar and Lee Hayward held firm in the second half to deny the Meadows of any chance of a comeback.
