Sports expo an exciting initiative

Kiama Municipal Council’s inaugural South Coast Sport, Health and Leisure Expo is a great initiative.
The expo will be held at Kiama Leisure Centre on October 3 and 4.
Not only will it recognise our past and present sports achievers, but it will also promote the message of a healthy lifestyle.
Although that’s a message that is probably already heeded well in Kiama, it’s not necessarily so for the rest of Australia.
News-Medical.Net reported this week that, according to a new report from the Baker Heart Research Institute in Melbourne, nine million adult Australians were now obese or overweight, more than the US, and the nation was facing a ticking “fat bomb” with the potential to cause 123,000 premature deaths in the next two decades.
The website report said experts had warned that unless the crisis was averted, obesity-related health costs could exceed $6 billion and that an extra 700,000 people would be admitted to hospital for heart attacks, strokes and blood clots.
The South Coast Sport, Health and Leisure Expo will hopefully put the message out that we need not be a part of those reported statistics.
The expo will also incorporate a Gala Charity Dinner on Saturday, October 11, which will re-launch the Kiama Independent Sport Star Award after a seven-year absence.
So the focus in our community will truly be on sport in October – from achievers, facilities, equipment and businesses. It will be something to look forward to.
