KIAMA was buzzing with all things sport-related last weekend as the first inaugural South Coast Sport, Health and Leisure Expo was held.

The official launch of the event took place at Kiama Leisure Centre on Friday evening (3/10) with many people gathering to celebrate the presence of sport in the region.

On Saturday, more than 30 exhibitors showcased a range of sport, health and leisure products and services available on the South Coast, with more than 750 people enjoying the items on display.

Event co-ordinator Carole Johnston was very pleased with the turnout at the expo and is confident that both patrons and exhibitors found the event useful.

“Most of the exhibitors were very pleased – obviously everyone comes in with a different objective, but nearly every exhibitor said they were excited to come back next year.”

Ms Johnston said the live demonstrations helped give the expo a unique vibe and attract a wide demographic of people.

“We had sporting groups and cooking demonstrations so it provided us with a real mixture of different people,” she said.

Despite Saturday’s wet weather, over 150 people participated in the five kilometre Kiama Fun Run, which took in some of Kiama’s most stunning scenery.

“We were very surprised – we were hoping to get a 100 people but to get 150 and see lots of teams and individuals of all different ages compete was just wonderful,” Ms Johnston said.

Organisers of the expo also unveiled the first inductees of the Sports Honour Roll, which acknowledges South Coast residents who have made an exceptional contribution to sport.

The 2008 honourees were Athol Noble, Norma Stead, Michael Cronin, Jim Miller, Kim Dalton and Paul Quinn.

Kiama Independent Sports Editor, David Hall, believes all six inductees have achieved outstanding results in their chosen sports and serve as inspiration for budding athletes.

Ms Johnston said members of Kiama Council were also pleased with the event and were “looking forward to seeing it be bigger and better next year.”

The Expo will finish with a Gala Charity Sports Dinner, to be held this weekend, announcing the Kiama Independent Sport Star Awards.

The event will feature entertainment from former test cricketer, Kerry O’Keefe.
