SOOK, a three-month-old rainbow lorikeet, is the latest addition to WIRES bird co-ordinator Bob Kalnin’s menagerie of orphaned and injured birds.

Found alone on the ground, Sook’s chances weren’t looking good, but with WIRES to the rescue, he’s made a full recovery and is well on the way to release later this year.

“We think it was his first adventure outside the nest, but he got separated from his parents because he was too young to be flying,” Mr Kalnin said.

“But now he’s almost at the age where he’ll test his wings.”

With spring just around the corner, Mr Kalnin is preparing for the influx of birds that will come into care, from lost orphans, lost pets, car hits and cat or dog attacks.

“If you find a bird that’s been attacked by a cat or dog, call us immediately,” he said.

Mr Kalnin also advised that if feeding wild birds, feed them small amounts of fruit.

“A lot of people feed birds bread and honey, which they love, but in the long run it’s very bad for them,” he said.

“We also have a good return rate for lost pets, but don’t forget to call us if your pet bird disappears.”

The WIRES Illawarra branch will hold its major fundraiser for 2008 – a trivia night – at Dapto Ribbonwood Cente on Saturday, September 6. All are welcome; tickets are $10 and can be bought by phoning WIRES on 4285 5630.

I think this program is great and the people who are willing to spend their time doing it are greater! I have three birds and consider them my greatest pleasure. I wish I had the time to help with a program of this type.
