Samantha runs rings around Queensland

GERRINGONG’S Samantha Broadhead has returned victorious from the Australia Cup athletics meet in Brisbane over the weekend.

Broadhead, a member of Kiama Little Athletics, was part of the combined Athletics NSW-Little Athletics NSW team that took out the under-14 age division and contributed to an overall NSW win on the day.

The Australia Cup is a teams event in which athletes from every state and territory compete in a number of individual events plus a relay.

The winning team is the one that scores the most points over the course of all events.

NSW was victorious in the under 14 and under 18 divisions and placed second in the open age division.

Broadhead, one of three Illawarra athletes in the team, came fourth in the 800m run.

At the completion of the individual events, NSW and QLD were locked together in a tie, leaving only the 4x100m relay event to decide the winner.

In a closely fought race, NSW crossed the line ahead of their northern rivals to seal their victory.

Broadhead will barely have time to celebrate before she is on the road again; heading to Wellington in a fortnight along with several other Kiama athletes to compete at the Little Athletics Region 5 Championships.
