LOCAL residents have once again strongly supported the Salvation Army’s Red Shield door knock appeal, with donations increasing on last year’s results.
The Salvation Army’s Kiama area director, Graeme Packer, said his 105 collectors took $17,613.65 in donations from residents in Kiama, Kiama Downs, Minnamurra and Jamberoo.
This was an increase of 4.5 per cent on last year, which Mr Packer said was very pleasing.
“I’ve been doing it here for 10 years and when we first started we got $5900, so this is great,” he said.
Nationally, nearly $6.2 million was raised over the weekend.
Appeal director major Gary Masters said: “Although we have not yet reached our total national doorknock goal of $8 million, we are still very hopeful that when people send in their donations this week we will get close to that mark.
“We thank all Australians who have contributed so generously to the Red Shield Appeal this year.”
For those who still wish to make a tax deductible donation, please visit www.salvationarmy.org.au or call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58). Donations can also be made at any Westpac branch, or by sending a cheque to PO Box 9888 in any capital city.
The $8 million doorknock goal is part of the overall annual Red Shield Appeal target of $68 million.
