KIAMA RUGBY CLUB
PAUL GLOVER

KIAMA Rugby Club continued their build up to the 2008 season last weekend when they took a side to the Queanbeyan Sevens.

Led by young captain Luke Paget the side reached the plate semi-finals in a tough competition with some of the best teams from NSW and the ACT.

The day started well for the black and whites when they beat the Mungandore Mud Chooks 24-0 thanks to great tries by Clint Paget, Mitch Lark and Paul Glover.

The second game proved one of the most entertaining affairs of the day when Kiama took on a Fijian Barabarians side that featured former Wallabies star Radike Samo.

In a tight match, the Fijians fitness proved the difference and a late try sealed victory but Kiama showed they were no easy beats.

In the side’s third match Wyn September, who was playing with Kiama for the first time in two seasons, pulled off some bruising tackles against the much-fancied Tuggaranong Vikings outfit.

Thanks to some great try-saving tackles from brothers Ben and Lindsay King-Gee Kiama were never out of it until the final stages, when the ACT side crossed after the bell to steal the win.

After two narrow losses and the win, Kiama progressed through to the quarter-finals of the plate division, where they took on Sydney side Canterbury and came away with a victory after a one-sided match.

After a long day of football the Kiama side took on a fired-up Gungahlin side in the semis and were again pipped at the post and knocked out of the competition.

The club has appointed Mark Corkin has been first grade coach for the 2008 season.
