GERROA skater Raymond Macken is off to October’s World WITP (Wild in the Parks) Championships, where he’ll be vying for a share of $30,000 in prizemoney.
Macken won the junior (15 and under) section of the Wild in the Parks Australia/New Zealand championships in Sydney on May 3 to qualify for the event, which will be held in Arizona, USA.
He defeated Victorian Lachlan Ross and Queenslanders Jesse Schurkins and Harry Mol in the final.
Macken, who celebrated his 14th birthday on Saturday, said the win was one of the best of his career to date.
“It’s one of the biggest events I have won – I was just so happy,” he said. “It was awesome; I was skating with mates from all over Australia.
“The WITP will be the biggest event I have skated in.”
Macken has been to the US four times – once on a holiday, three times to skate – but is looking forward to this trip more than any other.
“I’m looking forward to it – it will be the biggest event I have competed in over there,” he said.
Macken, who attends Kiama High, will spend his time between now and October skating at his second home, the Kiama Sporting Complex skate park.
“I don’t have any other events between now and then so I’ll just be skating at Kiama and some other places,” he said.
