POLICE STATION CLOSURE CLAIMS REJECTED

December 20, 2006

Section: News

LOCAL Liberal candidate Ann Sudmalis has begun organising a petition to in a bid to ensure the long-term future of the Kiama police station.

Coinciding with the recent closure of the Five Dock Police Station in Sydney, Mrs Sudmalis has gone on the attack over the governments police resource claiming Kiama could be the next station to go.

This (Five Dock) was a station not unlike Kiamas which they have said they will sell off, she said.

The State Property Authority Bill, which the local Member enthusiastically supports and voted for, gives power to State Treasurer Michael Costa to flog off state resources to raise cash to keep the NSW economy afloat.

It will be a sad day for everyone in Kiama if Mr Costa decides give me the money and closes the Police Station. There is no doubt it is a very valuable asset but it has more value to the community as a place where they can seek security.

Despite the Liberal candidates claims, Kiama MP Matt Brown ensured the long-term future of the station labelling Mrs Sudmalis comments as irresponsible scare tactics.

I recently spoke to the Area Commander who has always had a commitment to keep the police station open and he was very happy with the way it was going, he said.

There is no way the police station will be shutting down.

Kiama police station has always served the community well as do the local police and it is about time the Liberal party began to show them some support.

This is another example typical of their negative attacks on the police force.

Ever since I have been the member here we have seen the crime rate drop or remain stable and I will continue to lobby for extra police to be made available for our local command, Mr Brown said.
